Frederick Sykes: The One-Armed Man From
The Fugitive

Yes, this is a real page. Yes, it's on a brand marketer's portfolio site. The internet works in mysterious ways and I have the Google Analytics data to prove it.

Who is Frederick Sykes?

The one-armed man. The real killer. The accidental SEO goldmine.

Frederick Sykes is the villain of the 1993 film The Fugitive, starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones.

He's the one-armed man Dr. Richard Kimble spends the entire film trying to find. The man who murdered his wife and framed him for it. Sykes was portrayed by actor Andreas Katsulas, and remains one of the more memorable antagonists of 90s cinema.

He also, somehow, leads people to my website.

  • "I didn't kill my wife." "I don't care."

How This Page Exists

A custom action figure, a portfolio case study, and 5 search terms I never saw coming.

During COVID lockdown, my friend Mike Farzetta made a custom Frederick Sykes action figure, complete with packaging I designed to look like a real toy release.

I added it to my portfolio because it reflected my personality, not because I thought it would generate traffic.

Then I checked my Google Search Console and here we are talking about Frederick Sykes.

People Are Actually Googling This

If you found this page by searching for Sykes the Fugitive, Frederick Sykes the Fugitive, the Fugitive Sykes, Frederick Sykes Fugitive, or the one-armed man from the Fugitive—welcome. You were looking for a one-armed hitman and found a brand marketer from Philadelphia.

Monitor Your Data.
Weird Traffic is Still Traffic.

The lesson here isn't to build landing pages for 90s movie villains. The lesson is to check your analytics, because you never know what's driving people to your site, and you definitely don't want to ignore it when something unexpected shows up. I wrote a full blog post about it if you want the whole story.
